Michigan drivers are allowed to perform community service to waive driver responsibility fees for certain violations.

Learn how it works.

Community service can only be used to waive the fee for some violations. Those violations include:

  • No proof of insurance
  • No insurance
  • Driving without proper license, endorsement or vehicle group designator
  • Driving while license expired
  • Driving while unlicensed or license not valid

Each eligible violation or assessment may have the fee waived with 10 hours of community service.

Drivers who are eligible to replace fees with community service will be notified by mail, then must fill out a form to take part in the program. Once approved, the state will mail an approval letter, then the driver has 45 days to complete the community service.

Driver responsibility fees are being gradually phased out, but the community service program offers an opportunity for those who wish to use it.
