Scams are aplenty right now, and we all have to be careful not to fall into a trap a scam artist laid for us.

In Rockford, the Police Department put out an alert on their Facebook page because a Rockford resident reported getting a request for money from Citizens Behind the Badge that supposedly supports Rockford Police.

NO! NO! NO! It is a big bogus scam. DO NOT SEND ANY MONEY!

The Rockford Police Department said they don't have any idea who these people are, and they don't get any money from them.

They did a quick google search and found that it is certainly a big scam.

This happens so often with scammers preying on peoples sympathies for different organizations and causes. So many folks are a little bit gullible, senior citizens possibly, and it's easy to fall into that so called trap and feel you a doing good work by sending money to what seems as if it is a legitimate organization. Most probably, it is not.

So, what should you do if you get any kind of solicitation like this?

First thing in this case would be to call the Rockford Police Department and ask if they are conducting this fund raiser. Obviously, give them a report, as this person did, and a copy of the request.

The FTC, Federal Tarde Commission website has helpful information as well. The FTC says:

"When you report a scam, the FTC can use the information to build cases against scammers, spot trends, educate the public, and share data about what is happening in your community. If you experienced a scam — or even spotted one, report it to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov."

Thanks Rockford Police Department for being on the ball with a great follow-up and keeping Rockford safe!
