All summer long we’ve heard more stories on break-ins around the state, and now Michigan State Police are reminding drivers to lock your car and not to leave keys in the vehicle.

According to Fox 17, Michigan State Police said in a news release originating out of Marshall, that they’ve seen an increase in stolen cars - most of which were left unlocked and the keys in the vehicle.

From the MSP news release on Fox 17,

Criminals typically look for the easiest and quickest way to commit their crimes. A surprisingly small number of vehicles are broken into by force as criminals actively look for those vehicles that have been left unlocked.

A few other things you can do is leave an outdoor light on, as well as not leaving valuables in your car, especially if you park in public lots or streetside. MSP told Fox 17 that drivers should lock up valuables in the trunk or glove compartment.

Also as we start to roll into cooler weather, soon so will start the routine of starting your car to warm it up as you finish getting around.  Fox 17 says MSP advises against leaving your car running unattended, in your own driveway, or at area businesses that you're running into "real quick."
