West Michigan native and U.S. Representative Justin Amash formally announced his bid for president Tuesday night.

In a Twitter post Amash, who represents Michigan's Third Congressional District, said that he had launched an exploratory committee to seek the nomination.

Amash left the Republican party back in July, and has been a vocal opponent of President Donald Trump.

Amash, a native of Grand Rapids, represents Michigan's Third Congressional District which includes Barry County, Calhoun County, Ionia County, Montcalm County, and all except the northwest portion of Kent County, including the city of Grand Rapids. He has been the district's representative since 2011.
