Michigan State Park Getting $2.7 Million Upgrade
As summer nears and camping season in Michigan kicks into high gear, one Michigan state park is preparing for some big changes.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources says a $2.7 million project will begin this fall at F.J. McLain State Park in Houghton County.
The 443-acre park is undergoing big changes as part of a new master plan. The Michigan DNR explains the updates to the park.
Phase 1 improvements are scheduled to include:
- A new campground toilet and shower building sized to serve 130 campsites.
- Twenty new modern campsites serviced by 20/30/50 amp electrical service.
- A new road for the existing campground.
- Utility updates.
Phase 2 construction will include:
- Additional parking, day use green space, and beach access improvements at the “Breakies” day use area.
- A new park entrance and contact station.
- Sixteen additional modern campsites offering 20/30/50 amp electric.
- Demolition and restoration along the existing campsite lakeshore.
The work was originally planned to start this spring, but it has been postponed until after the busy summer camping season.
It's going to take a major road trip to go and enjoy the updates at F.J. McLain State Park, but it should be worth the wait. More lakeshore camping options in the Upper Peninsula are always welcome.
