Here Are the New Michigan Laws for 2026 We Need to Know
It's 2026, and guess what? We have some new laws and policy changes in Michigan we all should be aware of because they will affect all of our lives one way or another.
WHAT IS NEW AND HOW WILL IT AFFECT ME?
The website, Click On Detroit.com listed the top four that went into effect on January first!
1. New cannabis wholesale tax takes effect
Michigan will implement a 24% wholesale excise tax on recreational marijuana transfers to retailers. This tax — on top of the existing 10% retail excise tax and standard sales tax — is designed to generate substantial revenue for infrastructure and other state priorities.
While supporters argue it will help fund roads and public services, critics warn it may push consumers back to the unregulated market due to higher retail prices.
2. Minimum wage rises
Beginning the first of the year, the state’s general minimum wage rose from $12.48 to $13.73 per hour under the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act. This adjustment also includes a gradual increase in tipped wages — tipped workers will earn at least 40% of the minimum wage starting in 2026.
More information on how Michigan’s minimum wage will change over the next few years can be found on the official Labor and Economic Opportunity website here.
3. Unemployment benefits get a boost
Alongside higher wages, Michigan’s unemployment benefits will also climb. Starting now, new claims may qualify for up to $530 per week, up from $446. In addition, the amount provided for eligible dependents will rise as well.
This increase is part of broader unemployment insurance reforms aimed at strengthening financial support for Michiganders during job transitions. Notably, the weekly benefit amount will continue rising in future years per a phased schedule tied to inflation.
4. ‘Ticket bot’ law kicks in
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer recently signed dozens of bills into law, including the Taylor Swift bill.
This bill cracks down on the use of automated bots that buy large quantities of event tickets and resell them at inflated prices.
By prohibiting bot-driven ticket purchases, the legislation aims to give regular consumers a fairer chance to buy tickets at face value for concerts, sporting events, and live shows.
