A ferry boat with about 56 passengers got stuck in the ice on New Year's Eve while heading to Mackinac Island.

The Arnold Mackinac Island Ferry left at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday. It was scheduled to arrive at 8:35 a.m., but the ferry didn't arrive until just before 10:30 a.m. after getting stuck in the ice.

Captain Tim Foley said he spent about an hour going back and forth while the wind and ice were pushing the boat. Eventually he was able to free the boat without assistance.

The water was clear the night before, but winds brought in ice overnight.

The last time an Arnold Mackinac Island Ferry got stuck in the ice was 2012 and the Coast Guard was needed to free the ferry.
