If you’ve ever watched a band play at The Intersection and thought, “I could do that” this might be your weekend.

A small but mighty music festival is returning to Grand Rapids on Saturday, and unlike most lineups, this one isn’t totally locked in. The Winter Wheat Music Festival is back, bringing a full day of live Michigan music, and an open invitation for the community to jump in and play too.

Hosted by the Wheatland Music Organization, Winter Wheat is a winter-season spinoff of the beloved Wheatland Music Festival, and it leans hard into what makes Michigan’s music scene special: collaboration, accessibility, and a little bit of organized chaos (the good kind).

The festival takes over The Intersection for nine straight hours of music, split between two stages, with nearly a dozen bands scheduled to perform. Expect a true Michigan showcase (roots, folk, Americana, and jam-friendly fun) with the kind of music that doesn’t mind if someone new wanders onstage with a fiddle or guitar.

And yes, you really can be part of it.

Musicians of all levels are encouraged to bring their instruments and show up early for the community jam session, hosted by the Blue Water Ramblers at 2pm. It’s exactly what it sounds like: a welcoming, low-pressure chance to play alongside other local musicians, no audition required. Just show up, tune up, and jump in.

Live band performances kick off at 3pm with the Blue Water Ramblers and roll straight through the evening, wrapping up at 11pm on The Intersection’s main stage with K. Jones & the Benzie Playboys.

It’s part concert, part community hang, and part reminder that West Michigan’s music scene doesn’t just belong to the people onstage: it belongs to anyone willing to grab an instrument and join in. Even if you don’t play a note, events like this make January feel a little warmer.
