Grand Rapids Area Game Store to Permanently Close

After nine years in business, a Grand Rapids area game store is shutting its doors.

Out of The Box Toys, Puzzles, and Games will be closing its location at 5212 S Division  Ave. in Kentwood.

Owners say that while customers enable them to double their profits since 2020, the business is still far away from being profitable:

The world has changed, and operating costs have risen sharply in the last several years.

They've seen the below changes since 2020.

• Shipping costs for incoming product have quadrupled
• Utilities have almost doubled
• Credit card fees have risen 30%
• Wholesale margins have dropped substantially

There is good news though! Out of The Box in Zeeland will remain open; they'll be consolidating the two stores.

Out of the Box owners say the last day in business for their Kentwood store will be Sept. 30, 2023.

All events scheduled through then will take place. While they have begun moving puzzles and toys to Zeeland, the board game section and gaming area will stay open through Sept. 30.

We plan on continuing operations through September 30 to give our beloved gaming family a chance to visit and say “good-bye”. OOTB Kentwood was our 2nd store and in the past nine years has become a 2nd home for so many who we consider friends. We know this announcement will be met with disappointment but are hopeful you’ll visit us in Zeeland for a weekly game-night or just to say “hello” to your Friendly Local Game Store.
