Mocktails and More at New Cafe Jazzy Rose

The newly opened Café Jazzy Rose is bringing a Jazz Age-inspired vibe to Ionia Avenue, but with a twist: the drinks are completely alcohol-free. The new restaurant and “elixir lounge” moved into the former Pochi’s Colombian Restaurant space on Ionia Ave. downtown Grand Rapids.

Cafe Jazzy Rose is co-owned by Chef Ben Kaja and Joseff VanHorn. They describe the joint as a jazz-centric restaurant, cafe, and spirit-free cocktail lounge inspired by iconic music cities like New Orleans, Chicago, and New York.

Inside, the space is designed as a “living archive” of Jazz Age history and musicians, featuring a gallery honoring jazz legends. Here's a peek at the interior:

A Growing Trend in Alcohol-Free Dining

The concept also taps into a growing national trend toward non-alcoholic and functional beverages, as more bars and restaurants experiment with adaptogens, botanicals, and zero-proof cocktails designed for wellness and social connection rather than intoxication.

Southern-Inspired Menu With Cajun Touches

The menu leans into Southern comfort food with Cajun and global-inspired touches, along with seafood, burgers, and fresh salads. There are also vegetarian-forward options like lion’s mane mushroom “crab-less cakes” and the Sun Ra Nut Burger.

Adaptogenic “Elixirs” Replace Traditional Cocktails

But the biggest conversation starter is probably the drink menu. Instead of alcohol, Cafe Jazzy Rose focuses on adaptogenic “elixirs” with ingredients like lion’s mane mushroom, ashwagandha, tulsi, valerian root, hemp, and ginseng. It’s built to create a social cocktail-bar atmosphere without the booze.

Right now, Cafe Jazzy Rose is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11a.m. to 7p.m. at 44 Ionia Ave. SW.
