Summer might still seem a long way off, but the City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for warmer weather and hiring for seasonal positions now.

City of Grand Rapids Hiring Lifeguards

Interested in being a lifeguard? Grand Rapids is looking to hire 75 lifeguards for summer 2024 at the three city pools:

  • Briggs Park, 324 Knapp St. NE
  • Martin Luther King Park, 1200 Franklin St. SE
  • Richmond Park, 963 Richmond St. NW

The position is open to those 15 and older, and an American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification is required.

The course normally costs $275, but the City of Grand Rapids will waive the fee for anyone who works at a city pool this summer. An aquatics manager will work with applicants to schedule a certification course if needed.

This is the third year the City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department is offering free certifications.

Parks and Recreation director David Marquardt said in a release,

By offering free lifeguard certification, we’re opening the doors to a new segment of potential lifeguards who may not have had the means to apply in the past.

Lifeguards can be full or part-time. Full time is 30-40 hours per week. Part-time is 20-30 hours per week.

The starting rate for City of GR lifeguards is $15 per hour.

Requirements for being a City of Grand Rapids Lifeguard

  • 15 years of age or older
  • Experience working directly with people
  • Basic customer service skills
  • Must be able to sit, stand, bend, and/or kneel for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to be in the water for extended periods of time
  • Reliable transportation or ability to get to scheduled shifts on time
