According to a study by AdvisorSmith, manufacturing is "booming" in Grand Rapids.

The financial services advisory startup has ranked GR third among large cities where manufacturing is thriving, The Grand Rapids Business Journal reports. Detroit came in at No. 10.

Here are their top 10 large cities where U.S. manufacturing is thriving:

1. San Jose, California

2. Wichita, Kansas

3. Grand Rapids

4. Palm Bay, Florida

5. Hartford, Connecticut

6. Ogden, Utah

7. Greenville, South Carolina

8. Durham, North Carolina

9. Detroit

10. San Francisco

AdvisorSmith looked at 318 U.S. cities and based their rankings on four key economic factors: manufacturing output growth rate, manufacturing output per capita, manufacturing location quotient, and manufacturing employment growth rate. They then categorized the results by small, medium, and large cities.

The report ranked Grand Rapids No. 20 among cities of all sizes, with a manufacturing output per capita of $13,931, compared with a national average of $7,032.

Other interesting findings from AdvisorSmith:

Geographically, the Midwest and South accounted for 39 out of the top 50 cities in the study while the Northeast only had 3 cities. Regional patterns emerged with the Midwestern cities primarily focused on automotive, agricultural, and raw materials manufacturing while the South maintained strong oil and gas, chemical, and furniture industries.
