Grand Rapids Landmarks Lighting Up in Color on Thursday

Thursday, October 13th, 2022 is National Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day. This is a national campaign to bring awareness of the devastation caused by metastatic breast cancer.

More than 200 landmarks across the United States, along with some in Canada and Ireland, will be lighting up with teal, green, and pink colors. The colors symbolize hope, immortality, healing, and spirituality.

Grand Rapids Landmarks Will Light Up

The City of Grand Rapids has joined the campaign and some of the city's most iconic landmarks will also be lit up with color on Thursday night.

Grand Rapids Mayor Rosalyn Bliss has issued a proclamation making October 13th Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day in perpetuity. Governor Gretchen Whitmer has also released a similar proclamation for the entire state of Michigan.

What is Metastatic Breast Cancer?

Metastatic breast cancer is a stage IV cancer and occurs when breast cancer invades other areas of the body. It affects the liver, lungs, brain, lymph nodes, and more. Both men and women are diagnosed each year. About 29% of women diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer will survive for 5 years after diagnosis. For men, the 5-year survival rate is 22%. Studies estimate that there are over 155,000 women and men living with metastatic breast cancer in the United States.
