Grand Rapids Bar to Close for Two Weeks Following Deadly Crash

Joey's Tavern on Fulton Street will be closed temporarily due to liquor license violations found by the state involving serving alcohol to a man who died in a car accident after leaving the bar, Wood TV 8 reports.

The bar will be shut down January 10 to January 24th and have to pay a $1,400 fine.

Joey's is being cited for three violations, all of which are related to selling and serving alcohol to Jeffery Longstreet.

On December 15, 2018, after driving away from Joey's Tavern, Longstreet was in a car accident that took his life.

Longreet's car was traveling on O’Brien Road SW between Covell and Collindale avenues in Walker when the crash occurred. The vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a tree. Longstreet was pronounced dead at the scene. The Kent County medical examiner ruled the death accidental.

According to Wood TV 8,

Joey’s Tavern responded to the ruling by saying it’s an “unfortunate circumstance” and “a sad situation.”

 

Longstreet’s family says the state punishment isn’t enough. They want the bar’s liquor license revoked.
