Alcohol seems to be the cause of a wrong-way crash that occurred in Grand Rapids over the weekend.

Michigan State Police were called to the scene of an accident, a little after 10 p.m. on Saturday, that occurred on I-196 east of Lake Michigan Drive, according to WOOD-TV.

Investigators say a 2008 GMC Yukon, driven by a 33-year-old Grand Rapids man, was heading westbound in the eastbound lanes when struck an oncoming 2008 Toyota Yaris.

After striking the car, the man got out of the vehicle and took his 9-year-old son with him to try and flee on foot. Thankfully, they didn't get very far because police ended up finding them not too far ahead. In the other car, was a 41-year-old woman from Grand Rapids along with her two kids, ages 7 and 9.

All five people were taken to the hospital for injuries. As far as what type of injuries they suffered, or their status, is unknown.

Police believe the man who caused the accident was under the influence of alcohol. However, no further details have been released since the crash remains under investigation.

Obviously, this crash was caused by alcohol, but April is National Distracted Driving Awareness Month and law enforcement across Michigan will be cracking down on distracted drivers. This can include texting, eating, or even using your GPS.

Specifically, Kent County has the second highest number of fatalities due to distracted driving, after Wayne County. Between 2016 and 2018, Kent County had 128 fatal or serious injury crashes due to this very thing.
