A Grand Rapids restaurant known for delivering pizza is handing out something else this holiday-- free turkeys for Thanksgiving.

WZZM-13 reports that Mr. Pizza is helping out West Michigan families who have been hit hard during the pandemic and may not be able to have a Thanksgiving dinner this year.

Mr. Pizza, at 553 Michigan St NE, is owned by Jacob Schoonmaker. One of Grand Rapids first pizza shops, it opened in midtown GR in 1063.

Schoonmaker tells WZZM-13,

"Everybody is struggling right now. There's a lot going on and everyone needs a little bit of help... Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I love football, I love turkey, I love family. I just want everyone to have a blessed holiday."

Schoonmaker says its also their way of giving back to a community that has supported Mr. Pizza throughout the years.

So far Mr. Pizza has delivered 26 free frozen turkeys to families in need in the Grand Rapids area.

While Mr. Pizza is currently closed for dine-in, due to executive orders to slow the spread of COVID-19, they are open for delivery and pickup daily: Monday through Thursday 11a.m. to 3a.m., Friday and Saturday 11a.m. until 4a.m., Sunday 4p.m. to 12a.m. Mr. Pizza's menu includes regular and specialty pizza, Stromboli, subs, salads, breadsticks, pasta, and wet burritos.
