The NCAA Basketball  Final Four will return to Detroit's Ford Field in 2027, and not everyone is happy about it.

Ford Field Was Awarded The 2027 NCAA Final Four On Tuesday

The NCAA Competition Committee announced the sites for the Final Four basketball tournament championships for the years 2027-2030 on Tuesday afternoon.

Detroit's Ford Field will host the 2027 Final Four, followed by New Orleans in 2028, Indianapolis in 2029 and North Texas (AT&T Stadium) in 2030.

The national semifinals are set for April 3, 2027, at Ford Field, with the national championship game tipping off on April 5, 2027.

The city last hosted the Final Four back in 2009, when North Carolina took home the national championship that year, defeating Tom Izzo's Michigan State Spartans in the title game, 89-72.

The University of Detroit-Mercy was named the host school that year, as they probably will again in 2027.

The Event Brings In Hundreds Of Thousands Of Fans And Millions Of Dollars

“It’s significant," Detroit Sports Commission Executive Director Dave Beachnau told Freep.com. “It gives instant credibility to our city when we’re out pitching opportunities for major events. It just helps as we’re pursuing other events that Detroit is a great place to host a large-scale event.”

He pointed out that Detroit will also be the host the 2023 USA Boxing National Qualifying Rounds, the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Regionals, the 2024 NFL Draft, and eight future United States Golf Association (USGA) championships.

Not Everyone Applauded The Decision

As expected, outsiders in the sports world began piling on Detroit, calling the decision dumb.

College Basketball Insider Jeff Goodman was the first to express disdain, but he was immediately shouted down.

Native Detroiter and sportswriter Keith Trudeau was the first on the defensive:

Detroit has been a fantastic neutral host of basically every major sporting event they’ve ever been granted (including the Final Four) but sure, go for the cheap engagement. Bashing Detroit is always great for that.

But Isaac got in the best shot at Goodman, banning him from Detroit, and telling him he could hang out in the burbs:

I have made an executive decision and you will not be allowed in the city of Detroit for this Final Four. We will allow you to set up shop at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Clinton Township. You will be limited to boneless wings and one refill of Sprite. You're welcome.

I wouldn't have even given him the Sprite.
