David Bowie Aylesbury Statue Vandalized 48 Hours After Unveiling
On Sunday (March 25), a David Bowie statue was unveiled in Aylesbury, a small town in Buckinghamshire, England, where the eccentric pop star first debuted his Ziggy Stardust persona in July 1972.
Just 48 hours later, the monument has been vandalized. The culprits spray painted the words "RIP DB" and "Feed the homeless first" on the memorial. David Stopps, the fan who crowdfunded £100,000 and paid for the statue, chatted with Mix 96 about the disrespectful graffiti.
“The paint was on the statue, the wall behind and on the pavement. It was about the homeless – but I do quite a lot for the homeless, which is the irony of the whole thing,” he explained.
“The man who created the bronze casting is coming up tomorrow to blow torch it off the statue, which is the only way, and then re-waxing it,” Stopps added.
The town’s deputy mayor, Mark Willis, says no public money was used. “I want to point out that this statue received precisely £0 of public money,” he said.
The statue is named Earthly Messenger and depicts the many different personas Bowie had during his life. Speakers above the memorial play one of Bowie's 2,000 tracks every hour.
