ArtPrize 2014: Jurors’ Shortlist Winners Announced
The ArtPrize jurors revealed their favorites tonight at the 2014 ArtPrize Shortlist Event.
The announcement took place at the ArtPrize HUB.
Five jurors were each responsible for choosing five finalists in different categories.
The winner of each juried category will be announced at the ArtPrize Awards on Oct. 10 and will take home $20,000. One entry from among those nominated will take home the $200,000 grand prize from the jury.
The short lists had a few surprises, but for the most part, nominations were filled with entries from venues that have had ArtPrize success in the past.
Kendall College of Art & Design of Ferris State University and Grand Rapids Art Museum (GRAM) each had selections in four of five categories. Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park, SiTE:LAB and the Urban Institute for Contemporary Arts (UICA) also had multiple nominations.
ArtPrize made adjustments to the public and juried awards this year, making them equal for the first time and opening the door to comparisons.
“This is the first year that we’ll see the public vote mirror the juried awards in a truly parallel way, allowing us to compare side-by-side what the jurors find fascinating to what resonates with visitors,” said Christian Gaines, ArtPrize executive director.

- Sonya Clark's "The Hair Craft Project," Kendall College. Clark is from Richmond, Va.
- Suzanne Opton's "Soldier," GRAM. Opton is from New York.
- Debra Van Poolen's "Artistic Witness," Fountain Street Church. Van Poolen is from Wayland.
- Zach Mory's "24 Circles And Diamonds," Cathedral Square. Mory is from Glen Ellyn, Ill.
- Heartside Arts Collective's "Unchain The Neighborhood," Heartside Gallery. Heartside Arts Collective is from Grand Rapids.

- Osman Kahn's "House," Meijer Gardens. Kahn is from Ann Arbor.
- Maximo Gonzales' "Tengo Hambre," Kendall College. Gonzales is from Mexico City.
- Alisha Wessler's "From Afar It Is An Island," Meijer Gardens. Wessler is from New York.
- Loris Cecchini's "Wallwave Vibration," Meijer Gardens. Cecchini is from Berlin, Germany.
- Ladislav Hanka "Great Wall Of Bees: Intelligence of the Bee Hive," UICA. Hanka is from Kalamazoo.

- Dance In The Annex's "Respirador (Breather,)" SiTE:LAB. Dance in the Annex is from Grand Rapids.
- Steven Lambert's "Capitalism Works For Me," Kendall College. Lambert is from Beacon, N.Y.
- Mel Chin's "Operation Paydirt/Fundred Dollar Bill Project," Kendall College. Chin is from Burnsville, N.C.
- Jason File's "Life Copy," GRAM. File is from Zuid, The Netherlands.
- Corey Ruffin's "ArtPrize! The Musical," The Pyramid Scheme. Ruffin is from Grand Rapids.
