The web site Niche has released a list of the safest school districts in Michigan. Not surprisingly, many are here in West Michigan.

In the wake of the latest school shootings, it's nice to know that many local school districts seem to have a handle on school safety. 23 West Michigan Districts made the top 100 of the safest school districts in Michigan.

The web site Niche determined its school safety rankings on a number of factors, including parental surveys on health and safety, the number of expulsions and the reported number of bullying incidents.

Schools in West Michigan who fared well on the survey include Spring Lake in Ottawa County which came in third in the rankings. Spring Lake had less than 50 bullying reports in 2017, no complaints of violence and no expulsions. Spring Lake was the only West Michigan district in the top ten.

Kent County School Districts were topped by the Kentwood District at number 15.

Caledonia landed at 16th, Grandville Schools at 30th and Byron Center made the top 50 at 45th.

Hamilton came in at 62nd, Ionia at 64th, Kent City at 71st, and Forest Hills at 76th.

Superintendent Dennis Furton credited the community of Spring Lake for the high ranking when interviewed by FOX 17 news.
