Grand Rapids’ Murder Rate Drops to Lowest Level in 50 Years

The murder rate in Grand Rapids has dropped to its lowest level in 50 years.

The Grand Rapids Police Department released 2014 statistics Wednesday morning. In 2014, there were only six murders in Grand Rapids. In 2013, Grand Rapids saw 17 murders. Over the last 24 years, Grand Rapids has averaged just over 17 murders per year.

Squirrel Breaks Into GRPD Squad Car [Photo]

The Grand Rapids Police Department found an unexpected occupant in the back of one of its squad cars the other day.

The GRPD posted a photo on its Facebook page Thursday, that showed a squirrel that had made its way into the car in Eastown. Officers suspect that the squirrel entered though the half-opened rear window of the vehicle.

A news release issued by the City of Grand Rapids on Tuesday announced that Police Chief Kevin Belk will be retiring after serving the city for nearly 34 years.

City Of Grand Rapids Honors Employees Who Go Above & Beyond

Tuesday morning the city of Grand Rapids took some time out to honor employees who have gone above and beyond, not because they had to, but just because they wanted to help their community.

The Team of the Year is the Grand Rapids Fire Department’s Utility Two team.  They got together to turn an old city dump truck into a traffic barrier that served to protect fire engines on the highway.  The best news of all, is this project cost taxpayers nothing.
