For 25 years, The Traveling Troupe has been giving back to West Michigan through theatrical productions starring and aimed at kids.

That includes upcoming performances kicking off Saturday of the musical "The Hundred Dresses."

The Troupe, made-up of a group of pre-teens, teens and adults volunteering their time, are able to perform a family-friendly production for eight- to 14-year-old children and their families in area Kent County Public and private schools.

However, four performances at 2 p.m. March 7, 14, and 21 (and June 6 at Festival for the Arts) will be held at Grand Rapids Civic Theatre, 30 North Division Avenue in Grand Rapids.

The free performances by the Traveling Troupe, part of the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre and School of Theatre Arts, offer children and families a theater experience bringing books to life.

The tale is the story of Wanda Petronski. As the new girl in school, her classmates at Franklin Elementary don't quite know how accept a girl with the funny accent and a faded blue dress. When she claims to have 100 dresses in her closet at home, the teasing begins. It is based on the fictional novel by Eleanor Estes.
