Arbor day is this Friday and the city of Grand Rapids is planning a three day celebration.

To help make our city greener, GR is giving away free trees to Grand Rapids residents!

Fox 17 reports that the city is holding its first Residential Free Tree Giveaway Saturday April 29th at 9a.m., at Martin Luther King Jr. Park.

To get a free tree, the city asks that you:

  • Keep trees properly watered and maintained
  • Plant your tree in the City of Rapids, in your yard or community garden and not along streets or in a city park.

A variety of trees will be provided by Bartlett Tree Experts. Citizen Foresters will be on site to help you pick out the right tree for your yard. The trees are 4-6 feet tall and containers will be provided to transport them by car.

It's first come first served, and one tree per person.

The day before, Friday April 28th, the city is holding the 2017 Mayor's Greening Initiative Arbor Day Planting. Over 350 trees will be planted in and around Martin Luther King Jr. Park. If you'd like to volunteer and help #GreenUpGR, find more information here.
