You’re Now “Welcome” to Roam Around Michigan

MDOT closed the information lobbies at the state's 14 Welcome Centers in March 2020 but on May 28, 2021 they will reopen.

The American Automobile Association (AAA) forecasts more than 1 million Michigan residents will take a trip during the holiday weekend, a 57% increase from last year. State Transportation Director Paul Ajegba said on the MDOT web-site,

"MDOT Welcome Centers play a key role in highlighting all Michigan has to offer both to in-state and out-of-state travelers. Our knowledgeable Welcome Center staff have a wealth of Pure Michigan information to help travelers find the destinations, events and activities they're looking for."

With easing restrictions and more people getting vaccinated, it seems more people are ready to venture out and AAA says you can expect a lot of company on the roads. Nationally, 37 million Americans plan to travel at least 50 miles from home. Gas prices are averaging above $3 in most areas. That's $1 more per gallon than a year ago.

The Washington Post is reporting that travelers appear to be choosing open spaces and nature over dense urban environments. Airbnb bookings show travelers are increasingly planning trips to off-the-beaten path locations, with searches for remote destinations in the U.S. up by nearly 40 percent just this past month.
