Did You Know the Yankees Played Baseball in Grand Rapids?
This doesn't sound possible, but history says the New York Yankees played baseball in Grand Rapids.
It was many, many years ago and certainly wasn't a spring training game. Are you kidding, spring around here can be weather dangerous.
It was a special exhibition game, and the superstars of the Yankees, way back when, were here. (No, Babe Ruth was not here. He officially retired in 1935.)
Take a look at some classic pictures from the game!
The year was 1937, the year after they had just won the World Series, beating the New York Giants 4 to 2. They repeated in '37, beating the same Giants 4 games to 1. Maybe the Grand Rapids exhibition game helped them!
They would keep on winning, in 1938, and '39 as well.
So, what brought them to Grand Rapids, actually Wyoming to be exact?
Back then, according to the Wyoming History Room's Facebook page, Wyoming Township was opening Bigelow Field, thought to be the finest baseball field in Michigan at the time. Clarence Bigelow owned the field invited the New York Yankees to town and they came. Quite amazing.
They had a few superstars of baseball at the time. Joe DiMaggio and Lou Gehrig and more road the train to Grand Rapids. They filled the place, 6,000 rabid fans who wanted to see the iconic players of the Yankees and they were treated to a fun game against the Western State Teachers College team, Western Michigan University today.
Oh, the score?
The Yankees, the Bronx Bombers, won the game, was there any doubt, 16-0. DiMaggio went 3 for 4, Gehrig went 1 for 2, and Myril Hoag, short stop, went 3 for 5, to name a few.
The Yankees weren't the only professional team to play Bigelow Field. The Philadelphia Athletics also were there in1937, as were the Pittsburgh Pirates, with Philadelphia playing the Dodgers in 1938.
You can't forget the Tigers because the came to Bigelow in 1940, '41 and '46.
The Grand Rapids Chicks, part of the Women's Professional Baseball League called Bigelow Field Home as well. Remember the movie "League of their Own?"

What a piece of history Bigelow Field was. Satchel Page, one of the greatest pitchers of all time, played there. He was pitching in the Negro Baseball League at the time and it took him until the age of 41 to make it to the majors.
It was a sad end for Bigelow Field however, as a fire in 1952 burned the structures down.
