Warning! Measles are Back and Showing In Michigan!
It's been a long time that a case of the measles has been detected in Michigan. It was 2019 when the last cases were diagnosed. But guess what? It's back!
This could be very tough for those unvaccinated against measles because it is one of the most contagious diseases, but is mostly dangerous in young children and babies our sister station 102.5 The Block reports.
102.5 The Block in Kalamazoo/Battle Creek, posted these surprise new cases were discovered on the east side of the state, in Warren and Troy, but it could be only be the beginning because it's so contagious.
Back in February of this year the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, MDHHS, announced a case of an Oakland County child associated with international travel had been diagnosed with measles. But that seemed to the the last of it.
However, that's not the case now and because it is so easily spread we need to be cautious and aware.
What are the signs and symptoms of measles? MDHHS says this:
- High fever (may spike to over 104˚F).
- Cough.
- Runny nose.
- Red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis).
- Tiny white spots on the inner cheeks, gums and roof of the mouth (Koplik Spots) two to three days after symptoms begin.
- A rash that is red, raised, blotchy; usually starts on face, spreads to trunk, arms and legs three to five days after symptoms begin.
What can you do?
Get vaccinated especially children if they are not already. That is the best defense against measles.
The good news so far is that not many cases of measles have been diagnosed in the U.S. this year. But because it can lead to hospitalization and develop into something more serious, measles are nothing to discount and mess around with.
