Just another sign that spring is here in Michigan.

One of the great signs of spring in West Michigan is the nesting and hatching of birds, ducks and geese. The Michigan DNR shares what you can do to help (and what you shouldn't do) if you find chicks, goslings or ducklings.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently used a small aircraft to observe and count ducks, geese and swans on southeast Michigan’s waterways for their annual aerial survey. The number of ducks observed this year was down when compared to 2015.

Yesterday, the Michigan DNR announced the state’s first confirmed cases of avian influenza H5N2. The disease was found in free-ranging Canada geese in Macomb County. Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) can infect both free-ranging and domestic poultry such as chickens, turkeys, quail and geese. No human HPAI infections have been detected in the United States.
