I always thought that the famed Soap box Derby was a thing of the past.  Today, with kids so involved with computer everything, riding down a hill in a "gravity powered" sort of car, was too mundane and certainly not worth the effort.

Back when it was a big deal, I remember my friend Jim Miley, a classmate in elementary, Jr. High, and High School, won the All-American Soap Box Derby and became a national hero/celebrity for a bit.  Okay, that was a loooong time ago.
At any rate, think again.  I stand corrected.

Boy Scout troop 280 of Sparta is hosting a Soap Box Derby run on Saturday, July 16 2011.  The public is welcome and encouraged to participate.  This event will be for ages 9 and to 18.  Everyone will get a participation ribbon and awards will be given to the first three places in each age group.  The event will be held at the corner of Knob and Prospect streets in Sparta on the back side of the water tower.  Registration and car inspections will be held from 9:00 AM to 9:30 AM.  Click here for entry details.

This will be a single elimination event. The first race will start shortly thereafter.  The Sparta Boy Scout Troop 280 hopes to see you at the event and wishes everyone “good luck!”

Note: Official rules will also be available for pick-up at the Sparta Community Education office next to the Sparta Middle School as well as at local bank offices in Sparta.
