HMMMM is the only thing I could think when I saw that Michigan apparently has some of the safest drivers in the country.

The Detroit Free Press did a story on a new survey that QuoteWizard did, which found the safest drivers based on "accidents, speeding tickets, DUIs, citations and fatalities" in all 50 states. They found that Michigan has the fewest of all of those, which puts us at the top of the safe list.

The company ranked the country's best and worst drivers in 2018 by state. To compile the rankings, QuoteWizard sampled incident data from users of its insurance website and "juxtaposed it to Federal Highway Administration fatality data."

The caveat, it only based the study on insured drivers, and as they study itself points out, we have A LOT of uninsured drivers. According to the story in the Free Press, 1 in 5 Michigan drivers don't have insurance. So, I'm not sure I'd go around boasting our excellent driving skills because you might be put on blast if your family/friends come through and realize it's slightly flawed and there are plenty of bad drivers still out on the road.

Michigan: Congrats, Michigan, you’re number one! If you want a stress-free road trip, pack your bags and head to the Great Lakes State. Drivers earn the gold medal thanks to less citations, speeding, and fatalities than last year. There’s one catch – our study only accounts for insured drivers, and this state has plenty of rule breakers.

QuoteWizard says Mississippi and Oklahoma fell in behind Michigan at the top of the safe drivers, while Maine, South Carolina, and Nebraska filled out the top three worst drivers.
