This is a big deal because if you do want to change over to a Real ID, you must make an appointment with the DMV to get it done and take paperwork with you.

I changed my drivers license over to a Real ID a few years ago, so I'm good to go, nothing to worry about. But, if you may have a trip coming up after May 7, and you will be flying, you must have a Real ID.

That said, if you have a passport, that, of course is a Real ID and using it at an airport is perfect. However, maybe you don't have one, or you forget your passport, having a drivers license Real ID would be a lifesaver.

So, what does a Real ID look like?

It's simple. It has a star in the upper right corner of our drivers license. The older ones have a star in a circle,

The newer ones will have a star over an image of Michigan.

What Will You Need to Convert to a Real ID?

WDIV TV4 in Detroit says you must have these things:

1. You will have to visit the Secretary of State and bring the following documents with you:

2. Your current Michigan driver’s license or ID.

3. A valid, unexpired U.S. passport, birth certificate, or other proof of legal presence document.

4. A certified legal name-change document, if your name is different from what is on your birth certificate.

There is no added charge for converting to REAL ID if you do it when you’re renewing or replacing your license or ID. If you’re converting at another time, there is a correction fee ($9 for license; $10 for ID) to convert to REAL ID.
