Ready for Spring? It’s a Sure Sign When the Butterflies Bloom!
It's almost here, Spring, that is, and it is less than one month away, Sunday, March 20. The sure sign that it is so close is the Butterflies Are Blooming at the Meijer Gardens is about ready to begin. That exciting exhibition is even closer, beginning next Tuesday, March 1st and running through Saturday April 30!
Meijer Gardens says the Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming exhibit will have at least 60 colorful species, 7,000 butterflies and moths from Costa Rica, Ecuador, the Philippines and Kenya.
Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory
Of course they're not going to fly to Michigan but once they are here, they will fly the huge five-story tall, 15,000 square-foot Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory. By the way, it's really tropical in there, too. It will be 85 degrees and 70 percent humidity, which the butterflies love but you may have a bit of getting used to since it's still Winter outside. A good idea is to dress in layers when you enter so you can sort of strip a bit because boy is it hot!
All ages Enjoy Butterflies
If you're up on your butterflies you'll be amazed at what you see with so many colorful and exciting butterflies including the blue common morpho, as well as brushfoot varieties such as the clearwing, lacewing and zebra mosaic. Gliders like the emperor, ruby-spotted and orchard swallowtails will also be flying about. It's very impressive, and one of the largest butterfly exhibits in the country, drawing people from coast to coast and many foreign countries.
