Frederik Meijer Gardens Release Their 2021 Schedule

Last year just about everything was cancelled or postponed due to the coronavirus. That included many of the events at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture park. Hopefully 2021 will be a better year. With those hopes, they have released their schedule of events for 2021.

For safety and health concerns, many of their regular events are either on hold or will be held virtually this year.

The Fred & Dorothy Fichter Butterflies Are Blooming exhibition will run from Monday, March 1st thorough Friday, April 30th. This exhibit features more than 60 different species of butterflies and moths in the Lena Meijer Tropical Conservatory. Approximately 800 chrysalides will be delivered weekly. These chrysalides and cocoons will be located in the observation station. They will transform into butterflies that will live in the conservatory. Throughout the exhibition, there will be special educational programming and the Lena Meijer Children’s Garden offers butterfly-themed activities. Last year we had to view the butterflies through cameras that were streaming live from the conservatory.

The Master Lecture Series: Secchia Garden Lecture Virtual Series will also be going on during March and April. It will be presented as a Zoom webinar. The series is free of charge. Speakers include Susan Morrison on Tuesday, March 2nd at 7 pm with her lecture “The Less Is More Garden: Big Ideas for Designing Your Small Yard". She is also scheduled to speak on Tuesday, March 16th at 7 pm with  “Garden Up! Smart Vertical Gardening for Small and Large Spaces". Bill Culina is scheduled for two lectures. The first is “What Do You Mean I’m Not a Perennial?!? Native Shrubs and Small Trees for Perennial Companionship” on Tuesday, March 30th at 7 pm. His second lecture will be on Tuesday, April 13th at 7 pm with “From Emerald Carpet to Amber Wave: Serene and Sensuous Plants for the Garden”.

The annual Fifth Third Bank Summer concert series is scheduled from June to September at the Frederik Meijer Gardens Amphitheater. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and restrictions, details regarding the 2021 concerts are still being finalized. Details will be released as soon as they are available. The Tuesday Evening Music Club at the Frederik Meijer Gardens Amphitheater will feature regional performers. These events are scheduled for every Tuesday in the months of July and August.

The annual Chrysanthemums & More! exhibition featuring chrysanthemums with hundreds of flowering plants is scheduled for Friday, September 17th through Sunday, October 31st.

The annual holiday favorite, the Metro Health Christmas & Holiday Traditions exhibition will be held from Tuesday, November 23rd, through Sunday, January 9th, 2022. This event features nearly 400,000 lights, 46 international trees and displays, carolers,  and a visit from Santa himself. The railway garden will be running through three separate indoor gardens.
