The Michigan tax filing deadline is now in step with the federal deadline for 2020.

Late Friday afternoon, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed Executive Order 2020-26 which pushes the deadline for residents to file their taxes from April 15 to July 15, as people deal with financial uncertainty due to the outbreak of COVID-19.

In a statement, Gov. Whitmer explained her decision saying,

This executive order provides immediate income tax assistance to people as they continue to stay home and stay safe during this crisis.

The state encourages those who will be getting a refund to file their taxes sooner.

WOOD-TV8 reports that City of Grand Rapids taxes will now not need to be filed until July 30.
