One of Michigan's most popular festivals has been cancelled due to COVID-19. I guess it doesn't really come as a surprise but the Renaissance Festival is a huge event that spans six to seven weekends and attracts thousands of people each year.

Festival organizers shared the news on Wednesday stating they were working on ways to hold the festival safely but due to current executive orders, it's just not possible.

We worked hard the last five months to develop a plan and mitigation measures which we firmly believe would have resulted in a safe and healthy Renaissance Festival. However, it is clear that the current State directives will not change significantly in time to allow the Festival to open this fall. Although we disagree with the current State directives that prevent a spacious outdoor venue from opening, we recognize the difficulty of the State government’s task. We share their goal of keeping Michigan safe and healthy.

The Renaissance Festival is now rescheduled for August 21 to October 3, 2021. If you purchased tickets for this year, hold on to them because they will be honored next year.

Several events make up the duration of the festival such as a masquerade ball, pub crawl, tea time, and a giant feast. Organizers say they still plan on holding some events that people will be able to safely attend such as the Feast of Fantasy -- a six-course gourmet meal with beer, wine, and live entertainment. They also plan on holding a parade. Details about these events will be announced in the next few days and coming weeks. Stay updated on their Facebook page.

Not only does the cancellation of the event affect families who look forward to it every year but volunteers, sponsors, vendors, staff, and the city of Holly.

The Michigan Renaissance Festival is a family-friendly event in the city of Holly that transports you back to the 16th century on a 17-acre field with recreations of buildings and shops from that era. Plus 17 different themed stages of entertainment such as comedy, theater shows, and jousting. Each week of the festival also features different themes. It also wouldn't be the Renaissance without giant turkey legs so hopefully with the Feast of Fantasy still taking place you wont have to wait until next year for your turkey leg.
