The Divorce Rate in Michigan is Falling
According to the US Census Bureau, the national divorce rate is falling. In most states, the divorce rate is trending down including in Michigan. There were 7.6 new divorces per 1,000 women in 2019, compared with 9.7 per 1,000 in 2009.
However, in a couple of states, the divorce rate has gone up in recent years. Here is a list of the top states with rising divorce rates in ascending order from World Population Overview:
10. Montana & Mississippi (tied)
9. Georgia
8. Indiana, Missouri & Alabama (tied)
7. Kansas
6. Utah & Delaware (tied)
5. Wyoming
4. Kentucky
3. New Mexico & Nevada (tied)
2. Oklahoma
1. Arkansas
The state with the lowest divorce rate is Maine.
Now, this doesn't mean people aren't divorcing in Michigan. They are. Just not as much as other states. The Divorce Guy claims that the top four Michigan counties with the highest divorce rates are Wayne, Oakland, Macomb and Kent counties. Divorce rates consistently spike in March and August every year.
According to a U.S. Census Bureau survey, the top three reasons for divorces are incompatibility (43%), infidelity (28%), and money issues (22%).
The average age for couples going through a divorce is 30 years old. In the United States, about 50% of married couples divorce, the sixth-highest divorce rate in the world.
Divorcenet.com says,
"Michigan is a no-fault state. The only ground for divorce in Michigan is that there has been a "breakdown of the marriage relationship to the extent that the objects of matrimony have been destroyed and there remains no reasonable likelihood that the marriage can be preserved."
