Meet the Michigan Heroes Who Saved a Toddler After a Carjacking

A Michigan family has a couple of heroic bus drivers to thank for helping them get their baby back after a carjacking on the state's west side.

What Happened?

The ordeal began Tuesday (10/4) when a couple in Kentwood stepped out of their vehicle for just a moment to drop off an older child at the bus stop. Kentwood is about nine miles south of Grand Rapids on Michigan's west side.

Before the couple knew it, their car was gone. The carjacker may not have been aware that there was a toddler in the backseat.

Bus Driver Heroes to the Rescue

The toddler's parents flagged down Dave Skinner who was driving a bus for the Kelloggsville school district. Skinner says the parents were frantic and distraught, asking him to call 911.

"When you get close enough you can see the look in mom and dad's eyes you knew something was wrong," Skinner said. "It's kind of a judgment call so I stopped."

Skinner notified the police and put the word out to other bus drivers in the district to be on the lookout for the vehicle.

Another heroic bus driver heard the call, recalling that she thought she had just passed the toddler in a nearby driveway.

Sue Figueroa turned her school bus around and went back to scoop up the child. In the video below from NBC News, you'll see Sue comforting the child and putting him in the front seat.

"He was crying, and I was just overwhelmed," Figueroa said.

You'll also see the emotional moment when the parents were reunited with their child. Figueroa says it was emotional for her as well.

"I was crying all day. It was very emotional," Sue says. "I was very relieved.

Fox 17 reports that the couple's car was recovered later, but police have yet to arrest a suspect.
