Martin Luther King Jr. Day Events in West Michigan
Grand Rapids is joining the rest of the country with several events today to remember Martin Luther King Jr.
Grand Valley State University will hold a silent march in Allendale at 1PM from Zumberge Hall to the GVSU Fieldhouse. After the march, GVSU welcomes speaker April Reign at the GVSU Fieldhouse at 1:30PM. Reign is an attorney and writer who lives in Washington, D.C. In 2015, she sent a tweet critical of the 88th Academy Awards ceremony and lack of people of color nominated in major acting and directing categories. Her "#OscarsSoWhite" tweet went viral. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences later changed its membership policies and voting rules.
GVSU will also hold a panel discussion today titled "#WhereDoWeGoFromHere?" from 2:30PM - 3:30PM in Kirkhof Center rooms 2215/2216.
Reign will speak again tonight at Fountain Street Church at 6PM.
Calvin College will host a march today on campus from 10:20AM - 11:00AM. The march will leave from the chapel entrance.
Additional events at Calvin College include two talks:
- “The Work That Is Still To Be Done: The Importance Of Studying Intergroup Relations” by Jordan Daley of the Center for Social Research at the Commons Annex Lecture Hall from 11:10AM - Noon.
- “Why Are All The Black Kids Still Sitting Together In The Cafeteria? And Other Conversations About Race” by Beverly Daniel Tatum at 12:30PM.
