We all know that Mackinac Island doesn't allow motorized vehicles on the island. When you get off the ferries you are stepping back in time, so to speak.

Horse drawn carriages, taxis, if you will, bicycles, people walking, all greet you. Yes it seems chaotic at first with so many people, but it is such a breath of fresh air and you can feel the stress of the day release.

But seriously, yes it's fun and relaxing, but what happens if there is an emergency? Possibly a fire or a medical emergency? Does a team of horses come galloping in pulling a smoke billowing, old time fire truck to save the day?

Does a horse drawn ambulance race through the streets to save a life?

Not quite!

Even though this patch for this Mackinac Island EMS team seems to show those wild horses racing to an emergency, the island does, in fact, have a real ambulance.

And the fire department?

They too, have seriously modern day fire trucks to put out any fire that may develop.

Whew, that's a relief!

People are so grateful for the professional emergency units of the fire department and EMS.

One contributor wrote on the Mackinac Island Fire Department Facebook page:

"My husband took a ride in the Ambulance on the island as well- after a brief stay at the Medical Center he was transported again but this time to the Ferry. I can’t say enough wonderful things about the care he received and how amazing they all were to me as the super worried wife. Everything was so wonderful and I attribute his recovery to their quick actions and knowledge of the situation. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!!!!"

Mackinac Island should be a bucket list spot for everyone!
