Making the trek from Londonderry, New Hampshire to Ann Arbor, Michigan is quite a journey for a human, but an especially challenging feat for a feline.

Kumiko is a young black cat who turned up in Ann Arbor around Thanksgiving, around eight months after disappearing from her New Hampshire home.

Reunited After Eight Long Months

Paul Ambler says his family was devastated when Kumiko disappeared early last year. His 19-year-old daughter Shaelee adopted a pair of 'sister cats' in 2023, and he notes that his daughter and Kumiko's sister Kiri were both depressed after Kumiko went missing.

Ambler tells Mlive that his family was delighted to learn that Kamiko had ended up safe in a Washtenaw County animal shelter. The pet had been microchipped, so the staff contacted his family when she was brought in as a stray at the Humane Society of Huron Valley near Ann Arbor.

Mystery Surrounds Cat's Epic Journey

Although the details of her journey are still a mystery, Ambler speculates that she either wandered all the way from New Hampshire to Michigan or may have hitched a ride with someone who traveled to Michigan to attend school at U of M.

"We were baffled," Ambler tells Mlive.

Staff members at the Humane Society were also shocked to learn how far the feline had traveled. The shelter had nicknamed her 'Crouching Tiger.'

"We wish Crouching Tiger could tell us the story behind her baffling journey, but the happy ending is what matters," the Humane Society said in an Instagram post. "Her family wasted no time and caught a plane to Michigan, to bring their baby home."
