Major Michigan Deer Hunting Rule Changes for 2026 Season
If you’re planning on doing some deer hunting this fall, there are a few rule changes you’ll want to know about before the 2026 season gets underway.
The biggest one is happening in the Lower Peninsula, where Michigan is getting rid of the longtime Limited Firearms Deer Zone.
What Is Michigan’s Limited Firearms Deer Zone?

For years, hunters in parts of southern Michigan have had restrictions on what types of firearms they could use during deer season.
Well, that’s changing for 2026.
Starting Sept. 12, hunters will be able to use all legal firearms throughout the Lower Peninsula, including bottleneck cartridges.
That doesn’t mean you can just grab anything and head into the woods. All the normal season dates, firearm rules and local restrictions still apply. The big difference is that the old Limited Firearms Deer Zone is officially going away.
What Other Michigan Deer Hunting Rules Are Changing?

The firearm zone isn’t the only thing changing for 2026.
Michigan is also shortening the traditional muzzleloader season, making some changes to late antlerless hunting, and giving certain senior hunters in the Upper Peninsula more options when it comes to using a crossbow.
So yeah, there’s a little more to keep track of this year than usual.
When Does Michigan Deer Season Start?
The new firearm rule starts Sept. 12, the same weekend as the early antlerless firearm season. Archery season begins Oct. 1, while Michigan’s regular firearm deer season runs Nov. 15 through Nov. 30.
Bottom line, there are enough changes this year that even if you’ve been hunting forever, it’s probably worth taking a quick look at the updated rules before heading out this fall.
