There’s a very specific kind of heartbreak that happens around 1:17am in Grand Rapids.

You’re hungry and suddenly realize that your options are basically gas stations, and hopes and dreams.

Meanwhile, the legendary southern 24-hour breakfast chain Waffle House continues to exist everywhere except Michigan. (Please make it make sense.)

They’ve pushed north before. There are locations in places like Toledo. Which, if you look at a map, is basically waving at the Michigan state line. So we can officially retire the “but it snows there” excuse. We have proof of concept that this can work in the north.

And if we’re being honest? Grand Rapids needs this now more than ever.

We have a noticeable lack of true 24-hour restaurants, especially after Denny’s suddenly closing a location with no notice, and that’s tough. We’ve got nurses, factory workers, first responders, and hospitality staff all getting off late with nowhere to eat. Parents awake with babies (hi, it’s me). And soon, we’re adding even more night life to the city.

Between the new Acrisure Amphitheater and the incoming soccer stadium downtown, Grand Rapids is clearly leaning into being a destination city. And where are they supposed to go at 11:45pm on a Tuesday?

Imagine it: a show lets out at the amphitheater and you’re still buzzing from the music. Instead of fighting for one of the few late-night drive-thru lanes, you slide into a booth. Hashbrowns scattered, smothered, covered. Coffee refilled without asking. Zero judgment for ordering waffles and bacon at midnight.

Grand Rapids already loves breakfast. We line up for brunch. We argue over the best cinnamon rolls and line up to order then at 9pm (Just ask Slutty Buns). We proudly support local diners, so a 24-hour Waffle House wouldn’t compete with that culture; it would complement it. We’re a beer city, a concert city, and a ‘let’s go grab something afterwards’ city. We just don’t have enough places that actually stay open long enough to make that happen.

So here’s my official pitch. Dear Waffle House: you’ve made it to northern Ohio. You can handle a mitten.
