It's a safe bet if you ask someone their favorite unique town in Michigan they wouldn't be able to rattle off an answer quickly. The thing is Michigan actually has a lot of interesting and unique cities and towns that are worth a second look.

These places hold stories, traditions, and monuments that are sometimes a little off the beaten path--not many of these places are at the top of vacation bucket lists. While Hell, Michigan may seem like just your average small town at first glance, dig a little deeper, and find some truly unique features. Residents have really embraced their enviable namesake, with Hell Hole Diner serving up devilishly delicious cuisine and the Hell Chapel of Love offering an unconventional wedding ceremony for couples who—quite literally—want to tie the knot in Hell.

While it may not have much else going for it compared to other towns in the state, you can’t deny the creative spirit of the locals – they certainly make a visit to Hell, one that won’t soon be forgotten.

How Did Hell Michigan Get Its Name

The origin of the name "Hell" is not entirely clear, but it is believed to have been named after early settlers, possibly a German family named "Heller" or a mispronunciation of the phrase "hell's half-acre."
