
Detroit Zoo Euthanizes Baby Giraffe After Freak Accident
Everyone loves celebrating a baby's birth—whether family, a good friend, or a zoo animal.

Back on October 24th, 2025 the Detroit Zoo shared that a healthy baby giraffe named Okidi, whose name means "orchid" in Swahili was born.

The baby giraffe was doing well until a tragic incident happened earlier this week that led zoo officials to make the incredibly difficult decision of euthanize the animal.
Detroit Zoo Euthanizes Baby Giraffe After Spinal Injury
On Friday the Detroit Zoo shared some terrible news on social media.
Earlier in the week, before the zoo opened up for the day 3-month-old Okiki injured her neck as running into a panel inside her habitat.
After monitoring the baby giraffe around the clock and running tests the veterinary team got the news that nobody wanted to hear.
Okidi had suffered significant injuries to her neck and the veterinary team had to make the incredible difficult but necessary decision.

One thing I found really interesting about this story is what the Zoo did after it was decided that Okidi would have to be euthanized.
The herd, including her mother, Zara, was given the opportunity to observe Okidi following the procedure, which is an important step in supporting herd dynamics.
It makes sense, we as humans need to have some kind of closure or goodbye when we lose a loved one as well.
