20 West Michigan Businesses That Are Over 100 Years Old

Last year, my family farm became a centennial farm, a feat shared by approximately 6,000 other farms in Michigan. Being a small part of the farm's story, which my mom, grandpa, and great-grandpa have all had chapters in, is humbling. It goes without saying, but it is incredibly difficult to maintain anything for 100 years: a farm, a business, or your health.

This is an accomplishment that deserves to be honored, which is why organizations like the Michigan Retailers Association invite businesses that have been in business for over 100 years to be recognized. As it turns out, West Michigan has a good number of businesses that have been around since before penicillin was discovered.

West Michigan Centennial Businesses

Grand Rapids' oldest continuously running business, Nick Fink's bar in Comstock Park, has been in operation for 138 years. But sadly, it was listed for sale earlier this year, and offers are now being taken publicly. While Crain's Grand Rapids reports that many interested parties want to keep it as a bar, this could mean the true end of an era for the city.

Because of this, we're taking a look at 20 of West Michigan's longest-running businesses, highlighting each one's longevity. Some of these are still open, while others have since closed their doors after impressive runs in the marketplace.
