My two sons love the outdoors as much as I do and we spent some quality time this weekend getting prepared for turkey and deer hunting for this season.

I am a lucky dad to have two boys who love the outdoors as much as I do. All three of us love to fish and we have spent a lot of time in the woods together but this year is extra exciting because the boys will be able to take some game this year hunting.

We were steelhead fishing over the weekend and my son Evan caught a nice walleye but unfortunately, we had to throw it back because they are out of season.  While fishing we were planning our weekend which entailed shooting our bows and shooting our guns.

I have been working with both boys for a few years on shooting archery and recently introduced them to shooting firearms. While most families were Easter egg hunting, my boys and I were fishing in the mornings and then improving our shooting skills in the afternoon and evenings.

Both of the boys have improved dramatically in shooting their bows. They have been practicing in my barn for years and have no trouble grouping some arrows in the target. When it comes to archery hunting for Michigan whitetail deer, my rule on my farm is you have to be a good shot to get in the field or blind to hunt. The boys love shooting together and it's exciting watching them learn and improve. We have more practice in the barn and from the tree stand this year before the season begins. Practicing is fun and important to get a safe clean kill so we are not wounding animals and feeding the coyotes and bears.

I have been working with the boys on their shooting with their shotguns. Both boys have passed their hunter safety classes and spent time with me in the woods. Now it's time for them to hone their skills shooting their firearms. Just like with their archery equipment, they are learning their shotguns, respecting their firearms, making sure they can make a clean safe kill when they enter the turkey blind with me and eventually the deer blind.

Right now the boys are shooting practice, game, and turkey loads. They both are doing very well. As they get used to shooting those loads accurately and after turkey season is over, we will begin working on shooting deer loads.

We have lots of work to do this year but the memories being created and the fun we are having is priceless.
