Michigan’s Free Fishing Weekend Returns This June

Michigan is known for its wide variety of fish, and fishing for sport is consistently one of its most popular outdoor activities. This has long been a core activity in Michigan, which is surprising considering there are 11,000 inland lakes and 300 named rivers around the state.

Michigan has seen a large increase in first-time fishing license purchasers since the COVID-19 pandemic, and license sales have stayed consistent. If you're interested in trying but don't know what to expect, the State of Michigan hosts a free fishing weekend to get a taste of the bait. Who knows, you might just get hooked. 

Michigan Fishing Licenses

Traditionally, if you are 17 years old or older, you must purchase a fishing license to fish on any water. These usually run for $26 for Michigan residents and $76 for nonresidents. However, twice a year, the State of Michigan hosts a Free Fishing weekend (one in summer and one in winter) where fishing license fees are waived for two days and everyone can enjoy fishing anywhere around the state or on the Great Lakes.

This year's free summer weekend is June 7-8. It is part of the "Three Free Weekend," during which Michigan residents and nonresidents can go fishing, ride off-road trails, and visit state parks and boating access sites for free. Usually, these activities require licenses, fees, or admission costs, but all of that is waived if you follow the observed rules for each activity.

This is a great opportunity to get your feet wet (physically and metaphorically) and try something new with the whole family.
