Michigan is known for its beer and wine.... but which Mitten State counties are taking it too far?

Drunkest Counties in the U.S.

Intoxistates.com created a map of the booziest and driest counties across the country, based on info from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s excessive drinking data from county health departments.

According to the CDC, excessive drinking is defined as more than four drinks in one sitting for women and more than eight drinks in one sitting for men. Weekly it's defined as more than eight for women or 15 for men.

The No. 1 drunkest county in the U.S.?

According to the study, that's Gallatin County, Montana. There, 26.8 percent of residents are considered excessive drinkers.

Coming in at No. 2 is Outagamie County, Wisconsin where 26.13 percent of residents are excessive drinkers. It's certainly not the only county in Wisconsin either - pretty much the whole state is showing up as red and purple (indicating heavy drinking). The study finds that 25.29 percent of Wisconsin residents are excessive drinkers.

Overall, the driest county in the country is Utah County, with only 9.04 percent of residents as excessive drinkers.

Drunkest Counties in Michigan

Here are the drunkest counties in Michigan, according to the Intoxistates.com's map:

  1. Ottawa County - 20.9 percent of residents are excessive drinkers
  2. Houghton County - 19.98 percent of residents are excessive drinkers
  3. Livingston County - 19.94 percent of residents are excessive drinkers
  4. Kent County - 19.53 percent of residents are excessive drinkers
  5. Ionia County - 19.36 percent of residents are excessive drinkers

Overall, the study found that 19 percent of Michigan residents are drinking excessively.

Driest Counties in Michigan

Some counties though, defined by green on the map, are showing up as some of the driest. Here's where the least amount of boozing is going on in Michigan:

  1. Lake County - 13.49 percent of residents are excessive drinkers
  2. Ontonagon County - 13.93 percent of residents are excessive drinkers
  3. Montmorency County - 14.19 percent of residents are excessive drinkers
  4. Alcona County - 14.56 percent of residents are excessive drinkers
  5. Roscommon County - 14.73 percent of residents are excessive drinkers
