Michigan’s Beaches Are Open — But Can You Bring a Beer?
The trees are in full bloom, the birds are chirping, everyone has whipped out their sandals, and we're all ready for a good old beach day. Lake Michigan's lakeshore is open to everyone of all ages. Whether using a recreation pass at a State Park or relaxing at an inland lake, people like to relax next to the water.

Many people like to relax with a beer in their hand, especially if they're from Michigan, with our craft beer scene. However, while that's perfectly fine in your living room or on the deck, having a beer on a public beach is not traditionally allowed. These are the official rules and how some get around them.
Alcohol Prohibited On All Beaches
As a general rule of thumb, drinking alcohol in public places is illegal (unless you're in a pre-approved social drinking area). Per MCL - Section 436.1915:
Possessing or consuming alcoholic liquor on public highway or in park, place of amusement, or publicly owned area; authority of local governmental unit or state department or agency to prohibit possession or consumption of alcoholic liquor; definitions.
State parks fall under this jurisdiction. A full list of alcohol rules at state parks and boat launches is available on michigan.gov. But, where there is a bit of a gray area is that not all beaches are publicly owned.
Do These Rules Apply to Inland Lakes?
Lakes and public beaches are where the rules become a bit murky. Traditionally, the lakes will have their own rules, and it's best to consult with the local jurisdiction. It's always safest to assume it is illegal.

However, Many people point out on Reddit, as long as you are being responsible, not operating any watercraft, and not drawing attention to yourself...a Coozie is your best friend. We obviously do not encourage this, but that's what other people are saying.
