Why Governor Whitmer Was at Yesterdog in Grand Rapids This Week

Governor Gretchen Whitmer spent Tuesday traveling through West Michigan with stops that included a major economic announcement, a Pride Month proclamation, and a visit to one of Grand Rapids’ most iconic restaurants.

So what was on Big Gretch’s agenda?

Gov. Whitmer Visits Norton Shores

The day started in Norton Shores where Whitmer joined community leaders to break ground on Chobani’s $567 million expansion of the La Colombe plant.

The project is expected to create more than 300 jobs and strengthen Michigan’s agricultural supply chain, with more Michigan dairy used in coffee drinks nationwide.

Whitmer Kicks Off Pride Month in Grand Rapids

From there, Whitmer headed to Grand Rapids where she signed a proclamation officially designating June as Pride Month in Michigan. She made the announcement at Good Judy’s Market & Juice Bar, an LGBTQ-owned business in the city.

In a post following the visit, Whitmer said Pride is personal to her as a mom, friend, leader, and Michigander. She pointed to past actions including expanding protections under the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act, banning conversion therapy for minors, and establishing the state’s first LGBTQ+ commission.

What came next? Well, a governor's gotta eat.

Why Whitmer Stopped at Yesterdog

Gov. Whitmer headed to the legendary Yesterdog in Eastown, a longtime Grand Rapids staple celebrating 50 years in business in 2026.

The visit wasn't just about lunch. Whitmer also presented the restaurant with a State of Michigan Special Tribute recognizing Yesterdog's half-century in business and its place in Grand Rapids culture.

According to Yesterdog, Whitmer ordered a hot dog for lunch and took part in the restaurant's signature tip target game, hitting the mark four times in a row. The restaurant also said she told staff she has been a customer since high school, which makes sense as she's a graduate of Forest Hills Central.

As you might have heard, last month she returned to her alma matter and gave the commencement speech.

Yesterdog posted photos from the visit and said they were honored to host the governor during their anniversary year.

Whitmer also shared the stop herself, calling it one of Grand Rapids’ go-to spots for decades.

What a cool honor for Yesterdog! They're no stranger to awards and recognition though, having previously been named Michigan's No. 1 "cult-favorite" restaurant and crowned among the best hot dog joints in America multiple times.
