Bryan Cranston's Weekend in Grand Rapids

ArtPrize always brings tons of energy on its own, but this year there was even more excitement due to a special guest. Actor, director, and producer Bryan Cranston spent the weekend in Grand Rapids! Long before he was slinging spirits, millions knew him as the suburban dad Hal in Malcolm in the Middle or as Heisenberg himself, Walter White, in Breaking Bad.

The Emmy award winner's trip to Grand Rapids was in the works for a while. About a year ago, Cranston met artist and ArtPrize executive director Tyler Loftis in New York City. Inspired by Loftis's work and the festival's mission to make creativity accessible, Cranston signed on to bring his Dos Hombres spirits aboard as an official 2026 sponsor. He co-founded the artisanal mezcal brand in 2019 alongside his Breaking Bad co-star Aaron Paul, and they expanded their lineup to include tequilas earlier this year.

With Dos Hombres powering pop-ups across town, Cranston was not about to hide in a VIP booth all weekend.

Fans spotted him out and about mingling, taking photos, and slinging drinks behind the bar at multiple local spots.

Silva, Teller's Lounge, and The B.O.B. all shared photos of Cranston's visits.

Photos online also show the actor stopped at Los Potrillos and Two Beards Deli, where he even signed a bottle of mayo.

Speaking about his first impressions of Grand Rapids, Cranston praised the local scene in an interview with Men's Journal:

This is the first time I’ve been to Grand Rapids, Michigan, where ArtPrize is being held. What we have seen here as we’ve been driving around all day today, meeting people, and going to all the venues around the city is art. It’s really, really beautiful. The city is clean, and everywhere you look, there are murals. If there’s a patch of grass, there is some art piece that has been placed there. What’s fun about that is that you can just stumble upon something when you’re not necessarily looking for anything specific... There are artists and artisans of all kinds.

Mentoring Local Students and Debunking Retirement Rumors

He also made time to mentor local theater students at the Grand Rapids Civic Theatre.

Hosted by BroadwayGR’s Jennifer Pascua, the private session featured an improv exercise where a photographer shot live portraits of Cranston cycling through emotions like "suspicion" and "aloofness," projecting each frame onto a giant monitor for the kids to study.

Cranston wrapped up his trip Saturday night at Acrisure Amphitheater, presenting the Delta Sky Club Award during the ArtPrize Awards Celebration.

Immediately following the ceremony, designer RC Caylan hosted a fashion show that brought 3,618 people to the venue, setting a new Guinness World Record for fashion show attendance.

While in town, Cranston also sat down with People magazine to clear up any retirement rumors, making it clear he has no plans to stop acting anytime soon. Meanwhile, local social media was buzzing that he was spotted at the Alpine Meijer too!

Between bar takeovers, restaurant stops, student workshops, and a world-record finale, Cranston practically made Grand Rapids his temporary playground for three days.

Did you spot him anywhere else while he was in town?
